A six year old Martinique agricole from HSE finished in white wine casks, delicate grape and vinous fruit over vanilla and a drying oak backbone, AOC cane juice bottled gently at 41%.
Description
A vintage 2016 from HSE, the Habitation Saint-Etienne in Martinique known for its cask finishes and vintages, distilled at the Distillerie du Simon. As an AOC Martinique agricole it is pure fresh-pressed cane juice with no added sugar, here run off a creole column and matured around six years before a finish in white wine barrels.
The wine cask steers the profile toward fruit and freshness rather than heavy oak. The nose shows grape, vinous fruit and a little vanilla, and the palate carries delicate fruit and grape with a winey lift over wood. The finish is shorter and drier, leaning on oak. For its modest 41% it has taken on plenty of wood influence, sitting on the woody, faintly bitter side with the fruit kept light and elegant. Genuinely dry and unsweetened, it is an easy, food-friendly aged agricole, more about finesse than power.
