Bristol Classic Rum, the English closed-distillery specialist trading on liquid history, bottled this 1997 Jamaican at a quarter-century old. The distillery is undisclosed, a common situation with older Jamaican stock, but the profile carries clear island markers, with several tasters suspecting a lighter column-distilled origin given its gentle, fruit-forward character.

The aroma offers tropical fruit, a caramelised note, glue and roasted nuts, the palate turns to caramel, fruit and an elegant, slightly diluted feel, and the finish brings caramel, tropical fruit, milk chocolate and oak. Much of the ageing likely took place in the cooler British climate, which keeps oak extraction gentle and the spirit refined rather than punchy, an effect amplified by the reduction to 47%. The result is an elegant, mellow Jamaican that some find a touch light for its years, better suited to drinkers who prize finesse and dried-fruit sweetness over the loud, estery power of the island's heavier bottlings.
