An 8 year old Guadeloupe agricole from Longueteau, distilled from fresh cane juice and rested in ex-bourbon oak, drier and more spice-forward than sweet aged rum, with dried fruit, caramel, orange peel and gentle wood at 46.4%.
Description
Longueteau, founded in 1895, is the oldest family-owned agricole distillery still running in Guadeloupe, and Opera from its Harmonie Collection is an 8 year old aged on the estate. Pressed from fresh cane juice rather than molasses, it carries the dry, spice-forward signature that sets aged agricole apart from sweeter molasses rum.
Maturation in ex-bourbon oak rounds it without burying the cane: a nose of caramel, raisin and herbs leads to orange peel, caramel, chocolate and barrel notes on the palate, then a woody, coffee-tinged, dry finish with sugarcane lingering underneath. Bottled unsweetened at 46.4%, it is a polished, balanced sipper for slow evenings, the grassy agricole core still present beneath the wood and dried fruit.
