Description
Bottled by Denmark's 1423 for its Single Barrel Selection, this is a 24 year old Uitvlugt from 1998 carrying the ICBU marque. Uitvlugt's column still gives a refined, lightly spiced Demerara, and this single barrel leans into a dry, woody, roasted reading of that base rather than a lush one.
Matured in ex-bourbon and bottled at 56.4%, it shows cacao, coffee and roasted nuts with dried fruit, balanced by a measured bitterness and a lean, focused finish. The alcohol is a touch forward and the rum benefits from time in the glass to settle. This is a slim, oak-driven Demerara rather than a rich one, suited to drinkers who like dry, roasted Guyanese rum with coffee and dark chocolate and are happy to give a single barrel some air, taken neat.
