An ester-forward Appleton aged seventeen tropical years and leaning fruity and funky toward the old Wray & Nephew profile, with overripe banana, citrus and a woody, leathery close, drinking well neat or in a Mai Tai at 49%.
Description
Appleton Legend 2005 is a single-vintage release from St. Elizabeth's biggest Jamaican house, drawn from stock laid down in 2005 and bottled at seventeen years old. Appleton works a blend of pot and column distillate, and this one pushes the higher-ester, fruitier end of that range rather than the smooth, oaky mainstream face, putting it closer to the funky Hearts style and the older Wray & Nephew character that long-time drinkers chase.
Matured entirely in the Caribbean in ex-bourbon oak, the tropical climate drives faster extraction and a deeper, drier wood profile across those seventeen years. Expect overripe tropical fruit and ester lift on the nose, then citrus, banana and a woody, faintly medicinal palate, closing nutty and leathery. Unsweetened and bottled at a sturdy 49%, it drinks well neat but also earns its keep stirred into a Mai Tai, where the fruit and funk carry through the dilution.
