A cask strength single cask Chamarel from Mauritius, finished in Moscatel and bottled by NWW, eight years old with herbal, woody depth and dried fruit, plum, floral notes and vanilla, a discreet, well made aged cane juice rum at 55 percent.
Description
Chamarel makes its rum from fresh pressed sugarcane juice in Mauritius, so this is agricole in style rather than protected name, and bottler NWW selected a single cask from the 2012 vintage for its Highveld Ageing Series. Distilled on a pot still, which lends extra body, it spent eight years maturing before a finishing period in a Moscatel sweet wine cask.
The Moscatel influence is present but restrained rather than dominant. The nose is herbal and fruity with dried fruit, plum and light wood, the palate turns to dried fruit, floral notes, oak and vanilla, and the finish carries plum, allspice and wood. Bottled at cask strength and showing a classic aged agricole structure, it leans drier and more contemplative than a sweet wine finish might suggest. This is a thoughtfully composed single cask for drinkers who like their cane juice rum aged, woody and only gently fruited.
