A Martinique agricole from HSE finished in Château Marquis de Terme red wine casks, three and a half years and 48%, all red fruits, cocoa and licorice over elegant oak, expressive and gourmand for slow sipping.
Description
HSE, the Habitation Saint-Étienne, is known for its cask finishes, and this 2013 takes an agricole distilled on the creole column from fresh cane juice and finishes it in casks from the Margaux estate Château Marquis de Terme. The red wine influence is the whole story here.
Matured first in ex-bourbon then finished in the wine casks, it carries a clear gourmand character at 48%. The nose offers cocoa, vanilla, spice and woody depth, while the palate brings ripe red fruits, cacao and licorice over elegant oak. The finish stays fruity and spicy with red fruit lingering. Bottled dry in the AOC tradition, it shows how a red wine cask can layer fruit and chocolate onto agricole's grassy frame without burying it. Expressive and rewarding, it is a fine candidate for slow, contemplative sipping.
