A cask strength Clarendon EMB at 64.3%, dry and raw with herbs, mint, gluey esters and young wood, an intense, quirky pot still rum that needs a long rest and maybe a drop of water.
Description
This Clarendon from 2009 carries the EMB mark and was bottled at around 12 years and 64.3% by Heinz Eggert for the Rum Artesanal line. Rum Artesanal works in the unsweetened, full proof tradition, and Clarendon's pot still marks sit at the funky, workhorse end of Jamaican rum.
This is a raw, demanding bottling. Herbs, mint, gluey esters and young wood lead, with ripe tropical fruit underneath and a dry, peppery, faintly bitter finish that runs hot at cask strength. Matured in Ex-Bourbon oak on a Vendome pot still and bottled without added sugar, it is intense and a little untamed, often needing a long rest in the glass and a few drops of water to come together. One for drinkers who enjoy raw, herbal Clarendon and are happy to work for it.
