An 18 year Appleton from Velier’s Hearts Collection, a 2003 pot still Jamaican at a formidable 63% cask strength, structured rather than wild, with layered tropical fruit, caramel, tobacco and polished oak in fine balance.
Description
This is an Appleton Estate from Velier's Hearts Collection, a series spotlighting pot still Jamaican rum, distilled in 2003 and bottled at full cask strength after eighteen years of tropical ageing in ex-bourbon oak. It is a Pure Single Rum, pot still from a single distillery, with no added sugar.
Unlike the high ester monsters of Trelawny, this leans on Appleton's lower ester, more polished side, so the patience it rewards is about structure rather than funk. Ripe tropical fruit and banana sit alongside caramel, vanilla, tobacco, leather and well integrated oak, with the eighteen years lending depth and the long Caribbean maturation lending concentration. At 63% the strength carries every nuance without solvent edged wildness, the alcohol kept remarkably in line. One for seasoned drinkers who want a serious, balanced, cask strength Jamaican where ripe fruit, spice and wood stay in harmony rather than going full Hampden.
