A dark, woody twenty nine year Demerara from Guyana, bottled by Nobilis from a single wooden still, all oak, leather, menthol and dried plum with a tarry, bitter edge, dry and full proof at 51.2%.
Description
This is an old single cask Demerara from Guyana, distilled in 1991 and bottled by the independent Nobilis Rum from a single wooden still on the Enmore linked KFM marque. Guyana's heritage wooden stills are the last of their kind on earth and give the country's rum its unmistakable stamp, and a 1991 vintage falls in the period when much rum labelled Enmore was in fact made on the Versailles single wooden pot still that then stood at the Enmore estate, so it is the raw, tannic wooden still character rather than a precise code that matters here.
Nearly three decades of tropical and continental ageing have made this dry and dark. Oak, leather, menthol and dried plum dominate, with coffee, herbal and licorice notes and a tarry, faintly Caroni like bitterness on a long, woody finish. Bottled unsweetened at 51.2%, it is a serious, contemplative pour for those who love austere, oak driven Demerara and will find chasing sweetness pointless here.
