A 16 year tropical Savanna at a hefty 64.2%, finished in armagnac wood for a dark, roasted pour of cocoa, raisin, coffee and spice over heavy oak, intense and warming, built for slow contemplative sipping.
Description
This Metissage Maputo is a 16 year old Savanna from Reunion, a tropically aged rum drawn from a 2003 vintage and bottled at cask strength, 64.2%. Long ageing in the Reunion heat plus an armagnac cask finish push it deep into dark, brandy influenced territory, well away from any grassy agricole brightness.
The profile is rich and roasted, with the armagnac wood layering raisins, cocoa and warm spice onto the spirit's mature oak frame. The palate is dense, with cocoa, raisin and a thread of tropical fruit, before a long, warming finish of dark chocolate, coffee, spice and roast. The high strength carries genuine intensity, so it rewards slow sipping and a little water. This is a powerful, oak heavy glass for drinkers who love dark, deeply matured rum, more a fireside contemplation than a casual pour.
