A Jamaican blend of Worthy Park, Hampden and Monymusk finished in oloroso sherry casks by Navy Island, fruity esters wrapped in cherry, dark chocolate, nuts and wood, an unsweetened 46.3% sipper that rewards a little patience for the price.
Description
Navy Island built this navy-strength blend from three of Jamaica's pot still distilleries, Worthy Park, Hampden and Monymusk, then finished it in oloroso sherry casks. Pulling together the clean precision of Worthy Park, Hampden's high-ester funk and Monymusk's workhorse character gives a broad pot still base for the sherry to work on.
Distilled from molasses on double-retort pot stills and finished in oloroso wood, it shows woody, dried fruit, sherry and cherry on the nose, then dark chocolate, wood, ester and nuts on the palate, finishing spicy with vanilla, fruit and oak. Bottled at 46.3% and unsweetened, it offers a KiBa-like cherry and banana interplay with rubber and mint underneath, the sherry adding depth without added sugar. The nose outshines a palate some find lean, but as a fairly priced daily sipper it gives a solid look at how oloroso reshapes Jamaican fruit, and it benefits from time in the glass.
