Privateer Navy Yard

Privateer Navy Yard is a navy strength molasses rum from Privateer Rum in Massachusetts, a small American distillery with a following for its dry, distillate forward style. This single cask bottling is offered at full strength, 53.9%, and shows the youthful, oak driven character typical of the house, a rum that wears its New England barrel ageing openly.

The nose is on the young and woody side, varnish, dry oak and a cardboard edge giving way to caramelised sugar. The palate turns sweeter with young wood, vanilla and caramelised notes, while the finish is hot and barrel led with a tropical fruit lift. It reads as a dry, characterful everyday rum rather than a polished, long aged sipper, the spirit and the fresh oak still very much in dialogue. At navy strength it carries real warmth, so a drop of water helps, and it suits drinkers who enjoy honest, distillate led American rum with its rough edges intact.
