A long aged Grenada column rum from Westerhall Estate leaning toward Spanish style elegance, with orange peel, salted caramel and dark chocolate over dry wood and nuts, certified unsweetened and bottled at cask strength, 61.1%.
Description
This Westerhall Estate release is a Rum Artesanal single cask, a 1993 vintage Grenada rum given twenty five years in ex bourbon and bottled unsweetened by Heinz Eggert at cask strength. Column distilled from molasses, it shows a rounded, Spanish leaning elegance unusual for a rum of this age and proof, and its certified unsweetened status is a genuine selling point.
The nose is woody and rich, coconut and vanilla over spice. The palate brings coconut, caramel and vanilla with a ripe banana note, while the finish turns dry and structured, dark chocolate, orange peel and oak spice. Westerhall clearly knows how to age rum, and the higher proof gives it welcome power and grip without breaking the smooth, rounded line. It is a dry, long aged column rum for drinkers who like oak, citrus and nuts to lead, with cask strength bite for those who want it.
