A budget Canary Islands gold rum at 37.5%, light bodied and lightly sweet with soft vanilla, honey and a hint of hazelnut over fairly neutral alcohol, a straightforward longdrink mixer rather than a sipping rum.
Description
Arehucas Carta Oro is a young gold rum from Arehucas, a long standing distillery in the Canary Islands, made from molasses on a column still and bottled at 37.5%. It is aimed squarely at simple longdrinks, a cheap and cheerful gold rum built for mixing rather than contemplation.
Lightly aged in ex bourbon, it has a thin, easy body with soft notes of vanilla, honey and a faint hazelnut over a largely neutral, lightly sweet base. The alcohol shows through more than the flavour at this strength, and there is little of the depth or character that rewards neat sipping. As a mixer for cola or a long drink it does what is asked, providing a gentle backbone of sweetness, but those who already enjoy characterful, flavour packed rums will find their money better spent elsewhere. Honest about its station, it is a functional, value gold rum and not much more.
