A 1957 vintage J. Bally from Martinique, fresh cane juice from a bygone era carrying varnish, banana and grass into raisin, pineapple and cinnamon over a chocolate-and-vanilla finish at 45%.
Description
J. Bally 1957 is a piece of Martinique rum history, a vintage agricole distilled from fresh-pressed sugar-cane juice in the 1950s, long before the island's AOC was codified. Bottlings like this are as much a moment of history as a drink, prized for capturing a style of cane spirit no longer made the same way.
The nose is intense and layered, with varnish, banana, grass and wood, while the palate moves through raisin, pineapple, cinnamon and caramel into a finish of pineapple, dark chocolate, cinnamon and vanilla. It is full-bodied and richly aromatic, showing the depth that decades of age and an old distillation style can bring. Bottled at 45%, it stands as a rare, characterful expression of vintage Martinique agricole, a rum to be savoured slowly and remembered.
