A Canary Islands cane-juice rum from Ron Aldea, vintage 1998 and fifteen years in ex-bourbon oak at 40%, leaning quietly on bourbon-cask sweetness and oak with a light, rounded body of caramel, wood and dried fruit.
Description
Ron Aldea makes cane-juice rum on La Palma in the Canary Islands, an agricole-style spirit produced outside the French protected appellation. This Familia 1998 was distilled from fresh sugar-cane juice on a column still and aged fifteen years in ex-bourbon barrels before bottling at 40%.
The long bourbon-cask maturation shapes the profile more than the cane itself, giving a nose of bourbon sweetness and oak. The palate stays light and round, with caramel, wood, a little earthy spice and dried fruit, and a gentle, watery softness that suits easy sipping rather than intensity. At standard strength it is a mild, oak-led pour, an aged Canary cane rum that shows its barrel time clearly while keeping a relaxed, undemanding character.
