Ron Johan Strong Rum is a ten year old pot still rum from Ruotkers in Austria, distilled from molasses, matured in ex-bourbon barrels and bottled at a robust 55%. It is a sweetened release, and that addition shapes the texture even as the pot still and high proof give it real presence.

The nose is its signature, a sweet and spicy aroma with clear ester character that nods toward Jamaica, the alcohol well integrated for the strength. The palate brings oak, wood, sugar and spice, and the finish stays warm, spicy and oak-led with a coffee note. Tasters rate it as a step up over earlier variants, the cask more active and the direction promising. Being honest, the sweetness is part of the picture, so this is a richer, rounded take rather than a bone-dry one, but the pot still esters and 55% strength keep it characterful. A surprising amount of Jamaican-leaning funk for a central European rum.
