A single cask Tahitian agricole aged four years in ex bourbon oak, fresh sugar cane, floral notes and vanilla on the nose giving way to anise, tonka bean and light wood, a soft, pastry like and very relaxed sipper at 41%.
Description
Manutea distils on Tahiti in French Polynesia, making cane juice rum in the agricole spirit far from the French Caribbean, so it sits as an agricole-style rather than under any protected term. This Tres Vieux VSOP from the 2015 vintage is a single cask, pressed from fresh sugar cane juice, aged four years in ex bourbon oak and bottled at an easy 41%.
The nose is fresh and inviting with sugar cane, floral notes and a pronounced vanilla, while the palate turns toward anise, tonka bean and light wood over a cane backbone. The overall impression is soft, rounded and pastry like, a gentle and very drinkable take on aged cane juice rum rather than a dry, snappy one. The finish brings vanilla, green pepper and anise, a touch short but pleasant. An approachable, dessert leaning agricole-style sipper for unwinding.
