A six-year vieux from Clement in Martinique, fresh cane juice aged into an old-school, almost Armagnac-like profile of leather, roasted almond, spice and dried fruit over a woody palate at 44%.
Description
Clement is a 300-year Martinique estate, and this six-year expression is a vieux agricole distilled from fresh-pressed sugar-cane juice and aged in ex-bourbon oak, qualifying under the island's AOC. It carries an older, more traditional Clement character that leans away from bright grassy agricole.
The nose is rich and savoury with roasted almonds, spice, leather and a spirituous edge, while the palate stays roasted and woody with leather and dried fruit. The grassy cane core surfaces only late, more wine-cellar and Armagnac in feel than a typical young agricole. Bottled at 44% and unsweetened, it is a dry, leathery, spice-driven vieux that suits drinkers who like their aged agricole on the darker, more contemplative side, sipped slowly rather than mixed.
