A twenty-year Martinique agricole from fresh cane juice on a creole column, cognac-cask finished and bottled unsweetened at 44%, drinking like old cognac with smoky oak, honeyed peach, leather and dried fruit.
Description
Clement is a 300-year Martinique estate, and this 1976 is the house showing what two decades of tropical ageing does to cane spirit. Distilled from fresh-pressed sugar cane juice on a creole column and then finished in cognac casks, it is the kind of old agricole that blurs the line with fine brandy.
Twenty years of maturation under island heat builds deep, layered character, and the cognac wood adds a dusty, refined polish. The nose is woody and honeyed with spice and vanilla, the palate peppery and smoky over firm oak, and the finish carries dried fruit, smoke and allspice. Honeyed peach, tropical fruit, nuts and leather all surface with air, the sugarcane freshness still detectable beneath the age. Unsweetened and bottled at a gentle 44%, it is an elegant, wood-driven sipper that rewards patience and a slow glass.
