A fifty-percent blanc from La Mauny, the heritage Martinique house at Riviere-Pilote, fresh and vegetal with sugarcane, citrus and light tropical fruit, dry and unsweetened, a reliable Ti’ Punch workhorse and neat sipper.
Description
La Mauny is one of Martinique's larger and older houses, with roots back to 1749 at Riviere-Pilote, and this is its standard white at 50%, carrying the AOC. Distilled from fresh-pressed sugar cane juice with no added sugar, it is a straightforward expression of the island's blanc tradition.
In the creole-column style, run low to keep the green congeners, it leans fresh and vegetal, with sugarcane, citrus and a touch of agricole funk on the nose. The palate brings citrus, tropical fruit and melon over the cane base, and the finish stays grassy with apricot and melon. Dry and clean at 50%, it has enough punch to hold its own in a Ti' Punch while remaining pleasant neat. Not the most complex blanc on the island, but a dependable, fairly priced everyday agricole that does the fundamentals well.
