A ten-year Martinique XO from La Mauny, a cane-juice agricole finished in cognac casks and bottled at 42%, elegant and dry with gingerbread, butterscotch and fruit up front, then pine, spice and tobacco over cognac-cask wood.
Description
La Mauny is one of Martinique's largest and oldest agricole houses, with heritage at Riviere-Pilote reaching back to 1749. This Extra Old Grande Reserve is a ten-year vieux distilled on a column still from fresh sugar-cane juice, matured and finished in cognac casks and bottled unsweetened at 42%.
The cognac wood shapes an elegant, dry profile. The nose is fruity and inviting, gingerbread, butterscotch and caramel; the palate turns dry and spicy with fruit, vegetal notes and a pine-edged lift; the finish is fresh and green over cognac-cask wood and tobacco. Tasters note that it rewards a long aeration, twenty minutes or so, to let an early solvent note settle and the mature spirit come forward. The result is a refined, dry XO that carries clear traces of its cognac ageing, a contemplative neat pour for drinkers who like their aged agricole spicy and brandy-tinged.
