A Mauritian cane-juice blend bottled by Velier, seven years in ex-bourbon oak at a dry 56.5%, savoury and woody with fresh grass, salt, spice and tobacco over hints of chocolate and coffee.
Description
Chamarel is one of Mauritius's best-known distilleries, and this 2014 blend comes via Velier, the Genoese house celebrated for full-proof, additive-free bottlings. Made from fresh-pressed sugar cane juice rather than molasses, it is agricole-style in everything but name, since the protected term belongs to the French islands.
Seven years in ex-bourbon oak under tropical conditions has built a dry, woody frame around the cane. The nose stays fresh and fruity with a vegetal edge, and the palate turns savoury and spicy, almost whisky-like, with herbal grass, salt and woody tobacco leading into a roasted, tea-tinged finish touched by chocolate and coffee. Unsweetened and bottled at 56.5%, it is a serious, structured rum best taken neat in small, attentive pours where its savoury, layered character has room to unfold.
