A nineteen year single cask Guadeloupe rum from Bellevue, selected by Rum Artesanal and bottled at a natural 55.5%, where nutty old oak and bright fruit meet vanilla, mint and a soft caramel finish.
Description
Bellevue, on Marie-Galante, supplies bulk rum to many independent bottlers, and this 1998 vintage was chosen by the German house Rum Artesanal, known for single casks in the unsweetened full-proof tradition. Despite sitting among the French islands, this particular Bellevue is distilled from molasses rather than cane juice, so it drinks closer to a classic aged Caribbean rum than a grassy agricole.
Distilled on a column still and aged nineteen years in ex-bourbon oak, it arrives unsweetened at a single cask strength of 55.5%. The nose is nutty and woody with ripe fruit and a touch of spirit lift, while the palate turns spicy and minty with vanilla and a green vegetal thread, closing on caramel and fruit. The age and natural presentation give it the firm, dry character of a serious independent bottling for unhurried sipping.
