Description
This Single Vintage 2002 comes from Diplomatico, also known as Botucal, made by Destilerias Unidas in Venezuela. Unusually for the brand it is drawn from a pot still, a molasses rum matured in ex-bourbon wood and bottled at 43%, sitting in the smooth, dessert-leaning Venezuelan school of the Spanish style.
The nose brings vanilla, oak, barrel and a caramelised note, with the palate offering plenty of caramel, vanilla and sweet toasted oak alongside a touch of dried fruit, closing sweet and woody with a raisin edge and a hint of dryness. The pot still origin lends a little extra body to an otherwise soft, sweet profile. It drinks easy and comfortable, a relaxed evening pour for drinkers who value smoothness and familiar sweetness over a big step up in depth.
