One of four Esk valley distilleries, of which only Glencadam still runs. Founded in 1897 in a converted flax mill at Montrose, on the Angus coast. This is the quiet, malty malt of Montrose.

A 25 year old Glenesk, a distillery bottling, from 1971, at 62%. Glenesk was a light, malty Highland single malt of honey and gentle orchard fruit. It returned to malt whisky in 1964, with two pairs of pot stills, under the name Hillside. Drum maltings added in 1968 outlived the distillery and are working still.

Worked unhurried through the stillhouse, giving a gentle, honeyed Highland spirit. A refill bourbon hogshead held it, keeping the fresh, fruity character to the fore. In the oxidative, evaporative years the spirit concentrates to tropical fruit, honey and a waxy depth. A light, gently oily texture from the spirit carries through the maturation. Years in oak deepened the spirit to gold, the body growing rounder with time. Active wood frames the malt without ever crowding the light Highland spirit. Maturation ran slow and even in the old bonded warehouses on the coast at Montrose.

At a hearty 62% it carries real weight. A gentle, fruity malt with a waxy edge, lifted by a soft oak. A gentle apple and a soft spice lift the middle. A medium finish carries a soft honey. This is a closed Highland single malt of real history.
