An 11 year old Glendullan from van Wees, 2009, at 46%. Pear, melon and a light honey fill the glass. Most of its make goes to blends, above all Diageo’s Old Parr. Founded in 1897 by William Williams in Dufftown, the last of the town’s seven distilleries. Known for a green, grassy, lightly fruity Speyside style. This is a clean, fruity Speyside single malt.

This Glendullan was bottled by van Wees, an 11 year old, distilled in 2009, from cask 313236, at 46%, one of 302 bottles. Glendullan is a fresh, grassy Speyside malt of orchard fruit and a malty sweetness. The founding firm merged into Macdonald Greenlees and was absorbed by DCL in 1926, a forerunner of Diageo. It runs long fermentations and a slow distillation for a green, grassy, lightly fruity spirit.

The spirit was worked unhurried through the stillhouse, shaping a green, malty Speyside character. Maturation came in ex-Bourbon wood, the oak gentle behind the fruity spirit. By the integrating teens the raw notes fade and esters build, the fruity spirit growing rounder and creamier. A light, clean texture from the spirit carries through the maturation. Because the long fermentation keeps the spirit fresh and grassy, the cask shows clearly with time. Years in oak deepen the spirit to gold, the body growing rounder with time.

At 46% it is fruity, creamy and soft. Pear, apple and a soft spice, lifted by a soft oak. The mouthfeel is light and clean, carrying the fruit. The finish is light, fruity and clean. This is Glendullan's green, lightly fruity Speyside style.
