A.D. Rattray, the Morrison family bottler with its shop in the old village school at Kirkoswald on the Ayrshire coast, bottled this Glendullan, distilled in 2000, from cask 9417, at 54.6%, one of 341 bottles. Glendullan is a Speyside single malt from Dufftown, once supplied to King Edward VII. A second distillery was built alongside the original in 1972, the two running together until the old plant closed in 1985.

The spirit was distilled from unpeated malt, for a clean, grassy make with a fruity lift. Ex-Bourbon oak and an Oloroso cask held it, layered over the green Glendullan make. Through integration spirit and wood marry, vanillin rounding out as esters lend a riper orchard and tropical fruit. Long ageing turns the fresh green notes towards orchard fruit, honey and a gentle spice. Years in oak deepen the spirit to gold, the body growing rounder with time.

At a natural 54.6% it is full and creamy. Pear, apple and a soft spice, with dried fruit, fig and walnut from the cask. Beneath it run green apple, pear and a soft grass. Green apple, citrus and a soft oak see it out. This is the lightly fruity malt of Dufftown.
