Description
A 19 year old Glendronach, a distillery bottling, from 1994, cask 67, at 56.8%, 625 bottles in all. Glendronach is a richly sherried Highland single malt from the Valley of Forgue, built on full bodied spirit and Spanish oak. It ferments in Oregon pine washbacks over long fermentations for a full, fruity spirit. By 1862 it had grown into the largest duty paying distillery in the Highlands. It was bought in 2008 by Billy Walker's BenRiach company, who rebuilt it as a heavily sherried single malt.
It was distilled to a rich, generous cut, giving a deep, full bodied Highland spirit. It was fully matured in an Oloroso sherry butt, the wood deep in the rich spirit. At oxidative maturity aldehydes lend a nutty edge while ellagitannins draw a drying, structured grip across the fruit. Years in oak deepen the spirit to a darker gold, the body growing rounder and more resinous with time.
Bottled at a cask strength 56.8%, it is deep and concentrated. A rich, sherried sweetness, with dried fruit, fig and walnut from the cask. Dried fruit and a treacle sit behind the spice. The finish is rounded, dark and spiced. This is a rich Highland malt of dried fruit and chocolate.
