Description
Glendronach from the distillery, a 20 year old, from 1995, cask 2901, at 55.3%, 681 bottles in all. Glendronach is a Highland single malt whose founder was an early champion of sherry cask maturation. It passed to Brown Forman, owner of Jack Daniel's, in 2016 as part of a 285 million pound deal. It ferments in Oregon pine washbacks over long fermentations for a full, fruity spirit.
Distilled to a rich, generous cut, shaping a rich Highland body with real weight. It was matured in an Oloroso sherry puncheon, the wood working deep into the malt. Through oxidative maturity the esters concentrate, the orchard notes turning to raisin, fig and a dark chocolate. Maturation runs slow and even in the traditional dunnage warehouses on the Forgue site. The casks are picked closely, the wood matched to the rich Glendronach make.
Bottled at a cask strength 55.3%, it is deep and concentrated. Baked apple, honey and a dark chocolate, with dried fruit, fig and walnut from the cask. The mouthfeel is full and coating, the fruit dark and sweet. The finish is rounded, dark and spiced. This is a full bodied Highland single malt of real richness.
