Description
A distillery release of Glendronach, a 24 year old, from 1993, cask 654, at 58.9%, 431 bottles in all. Glendronach is a Highland single malt, revived from 2008 by Billy Walker's BenRiach company. It joined William Teacher and Sons in 1960 and became a core malt of the Teacher's blend. It was the last distillery in Scotland to fire its stills with coal, converting to steam only in 2005. Its whisky is now overseen by the master blender Dr Rachel Barrie.
Drawn from a thick, heavy wash, giving a deep, full bodied Highland spirit. It was matured in an Oloroso sherry butt, the wood working deep into the malt. In the oxidative, evaporative years the spirit concentrates to dried fruit, dark chocolate and a waxy, resinous depth. Maturation runs slow and even in the traditional dunnage warehouses on the Forgue site. The casks are picked closely, the wood matched to the rich Glendronach make.
At its natural 58.9% it is rich and chewy. A rich, sherried sweetness, with dried fruit, fig and walnut from the cask. The mouthfeel is full and coating, the fruit dark and sweet. It finishes long, full and fruity. This is Glendronach's deep, fruity Highland style.
