Description
A 13 year old Glen Spey from Brave New Spirits, distilled in 2012, from cask 800029, at 56.7%, one of 230 bottles. Glen Spey is a Speyside single malt made on Doonie Burn water at Rothes. Its stills were doubled from two to four in the 1970 expansion, the make still light and grassy. It is one of five distilleries in the whisky town of Rothes, in the heart of Speyside.
It was distilled in tall onion shaped stills, building a light, fragrant spirit with a thread of nuttiness. Finished in a White Wine cask, the wood building on the light spirit. Through integration the spirit and wood marry, vanillin rounding out as esters lend a riper orchard fruit over the nutty malt. Active wood frames the fruit without ever crowding the delicate Speyside spirit. Built for the blender's art, the light make ages with quiet grace as a single malt.
At its natural 56.7% it is rich and grassy. Green apple, hay and a soft cereal, with a crisp citrus and a floral edge from the cask. The mouthfeel is light, a faint waxiness carrying the fruit. A long, grassy finish carries a light fruit and a nutty malt. This is a quiet, characterful Speyside single malt.
