Description
The Campbeltown house Cadenhead bottled this Fettercairn, a 28 year old, distilled in 1988, bottled at 55.4%, one of 750 bottles. Fettercairn is a Highland single malt shaped by the unique cooling rings on its stills. It uses unpeated malt and matures mostly in American oak ex-Bourbon casks.
Made on mountain water with the stills drenched in cold water, the cooling rings lifting a clean, tropical character. Ex-Bourbon casks held it, the American oak letting the fruit lead. Through the evaporative decades the spirit concentrates, esters folding into dried mango, coffee and beeswax. Years in oak round the spirit, the pineapple and citrus deepening to a mango. A Scottish oak project has planted thousands of native oak saplings beside the distillery. After Ramsay lost his fortune, the Fasque estate passed to the Gladstone family in 1829. John Gladstone's son William became Prime Minister and reformed the taxation of whisky.
At a natural 55.4% it is full and fruity. A bright, tropical orchard fruit, with a soft vanilla from the oak. It is fruity and tropical, the light spirit shining through. The close is light and warming, fruit over a gentle oak. This is a fruity, tropical Highland single malt.
