Description
A 19 year old Dufftown from the Campbeltown house Cadenhead, distilled in 1988, bottled at 53.5%, one of 243 bottles. Dufftown is a Speyside malt built for the blender's art and now bottled as a single malt in its own right. It became the heart of the Bell's blend after Arthur Bell and Sons bought it in 1933.
Distilled for the nutty, malty character Dufftown is known for, building the smooth Dufftown style. Finished in an Oloroso cask, the wood building over the malty, fruity spirit. At oxidative maturity aldehydes lend a nutty edge while ellagitannins add a gentle, drying grip. The slow distillation gives a smooth spirit that takes well to the cask. In recent years the ferment was lengthened and the wort run clear for a grassier make. Maturation in the eight Dufftown warehouses is slow and steady. The malty, nutty spirit takes cask flavour well while keeping its Speyside fruit.
At a hearty 53.5% it carries real weight. Baked apple, nut and a creamy malt, with dried fruit, fig and walnut from the cask. A baked apple and a gentle spice lift it. Apple, nut and a soft oak see out the finish. This is a Speyside single malt of real character.
