Description
A Caol Ila of a 10 year old chosen by the independent Murray McDavid, distilled in 2014, bottled at 53.1%, one of 1262 bottles. Caol Ila is Diageo's largest Islay distillery. Water falls to the distillery from Loch nam Ban in the hills above.
Made from medium peated malt for a clean, smoky spirit, for a clean, coastal, oily make. Maturation in an Oloroso cask laid dried fruit over the make. Integration sees eugenol (clove) and vanillin (vanilla) fold into the spirit, the medicinal smoke gentler now. The spirit's lightness lets sherry, wine and bourbon casks all show through. Diageo's Special Releases have featured both peated and unpeated Caol Ila. Olive oil and lemon sit at the heart of the Caol Ila character. Long ageing turns the young, sharp peat into a soft, coastal smoke. Phenols from the peat smoke carry the medicinal, lemony edge through the years.
At cask strength 53.1% it is muscular. Ashy smoke, lemon oil and a saline tang, with raisin, date and treacle from the cask. The texture is oily, the smoke threaded with citrus. It finishes smoky, oily and bright. This is an elegant Islay single malt.
