Description
The London wine merchant Berry Bros and Rudd released this Caol Ila, a 26 year old, distilled in 1982, from cask 755, bottled at 54.5%. Caol Ila wears its Islay smoke more lightly than its southern neighbours. The distillery was expanded again in the 21st century to meet blend demand.
Made from medium phenol malt on soft Loch nam Ban water, building the elegant Islay smoke at its heart. A fresh bourbon barrel lent vanilla, coconut and a fuller body. Oxidative and evaporative ageing turns the malt rich and waxy, ethereal esters and a faint sotolon (maple) over the softened smoke. A slow maturation in the cool island air keeps the spirit fresh and oily. The spirit's high notes of lemon and grass survive even long maturation. It was founded by Hector Henderson and later passed to the Distillers Company. The make balances phenolic smoke against a bright, oily citrus.
At a hearty 54.5% it carries real weight. Peat smoke, citrus and a soft oil, with vanilla and a soft caramel from the wood. The texture is oily, the smoke threaded with citrus. A smoky, oily warmth lingers with lemon and salt. This is a clean, smoky Islay single malt from Caol Ila.
