Description
Chorlton Whisky selected this Tobermory, an 8 year old release and bottled at 58.2%. Only 293 bottles were released. Tobermory is the unpeated single malt of Mull's only distillery, founded in 1798 in the island's painted harbour town. The single malts are bottled without chill filtration at 46.3 percent or higher.
Made in the high reflux stills from unpeated barley, for a fruity, waxy make with a green lift. A wine cask shaped it, the fruit meeting the waxy spirit. At a youthful age the fruit is lively and the malt waxy. Sherry wood suits the oily make, lending dried fruit and a nutty depth. Tobermory has distilled in the island's harbour town since 1798. The town of Tobermory was laid out by the British Fisheries Society a decade before the distillery came. The distillery's history is broken by long silences; its buildings once stored a local cheddar. Burn Stewart revived production in 1993, and Distell bought the distillery in 2013.
Bottled at a cask strength 58.2%, it is intense. Pear, oily malt and a green note, and the wine cask lends red berry and a dry spice. A green note and a gentle spice give it depth. The finish is deep, waxy and nutty. This is the fruity side of the Isle of Mull's distillery.
