Description
This Teaninich was bottled by Douglas Laing, a 12 year old from 2007, drawn from cask DL 13783 and bottled at 48.4%. 324 bottles in all. Set at Alness in Easter Ross, Teaninich has distilled since 1817. It was founded by Blind Captain Hugh Munro, a Napoleonic veteran, on his Teaninich estate.
It was worked through the distillery's stills from a very clear wort, for the light, grassy, oily make Teaninich is known for. Ex-Bourbon casks held the spirit, soft oak that lets the grass lead. Mid age brings a deeper honey and a riper green fruit. The penetrating, fresh acidity of the spirit keeps it lively with age. Filled spirit is tankered away to mature in Diageo's central warehouses. The name comes from the Gaelic for house on the hill, a nod to the old estate. By the 1970s Teaninich was already one of the largest distilleries in Scotland. The River Averon runs beside the distillery on its way to the firth.
At cask strength 48.4% it is muscular yet green. A fresh, oily grassiness meet a quiet vanilla from the refill oak. The texture is light and oily, the grass threaded with honey. A clean, gently waxy finish lingers. This is a light, grassy Highland single malt.
