Description
From Jack Wiebers Whisky World comes this Tamdhu, a 42 year old Speyside malt from 1958, drawn from cask 1622 and bottled at 40.8%. Only 120 bottles were released. Tamdhu was first built in 1897 by a blending consortium on the banks of the Spey in Speyside, and it has been the sherried face of Speyside since its revival. Water comes from the Tamdhu Spring, the distillery set on the banks of the Spey.
Distilled in copper onion stills on Tamdhu Spring water, for a rich Speyside spirit built to take sherry wood. Maturation came in ex-Bourbon wood, with vanilla under the orchard fruit. At this great age the malt is full and mellow, the sherry deep and the oak polished. Years in oak round the spirit, the dried fruit and spice deepening with age. For decades its malt fed blends such as the Famous Grouse and Cutty Sark. Mothballed in 2010, the distillery was revived by Ian Macleod and relaunched in 2013. Sherry casks, both Spanish and American oak, define the modern Tamdhu.
At a full 40.8% it is bold and fruity. The ex-Bourbon adds vanilla, cream and orchard fruit. A dried fruit and a nutty oak give it real depth. The finish runs rich, nutty and spiced. This is a sherry matured Speyside single malt.
