Description
Single malt Strathisla, an independent Gordon & MacPhail bottling, a 15 year old release from 2009 and bottled at 46%. Strathisla was first licensed in 1786 on the banks of the Isla at Keith; it is among the prettiest distilleries in Scotland. Long scarce as an official bottling, Strathisla was for decades bottled mainly by Gordon and MacPhail.
The spirit was run through onion shaped stills with long necks for a rich make, to build a creamy, orchard fruit character. An ex-Bourbon barrel shaped it, gentle American oak beneath the fruit. Past fifteen years the fruit deepens into honey, dried fruit and almond. The cool Speyside climate gives a slow, even maturation over many years. The make leans rich and fruity, fuller than the lighter Speyside style. Few distilleries can claim an unbroken run of distilling as long as Strathisla's. The Isla valley's soft water and old stills shape a honeyed, fruity spirit.
At an approachable 46% it is rich and balanced. Apple, almond and a warm spice meet soft vanilla and honey from the cask. Soft orchard fruit and almond sit behind the sweetness. Ripe pear and honey draw out the close. This is Strathisla's classic honeyed Speyside style.
