Description
Bottled by Morrison and MacKay, this Strathclyde, aged 41 year old from 1965, drawn from cask 84883 + 84884 and bottled at 41.2%. Just 138 bottles were filled. Opened in 1927 by the gin distiller Seager Evans in the heart of Glasgow, Strathclyde is Glasgow's only grain distillery. Built first for neutral grain spirit for gin, it entered whisky with the Long John brand in 1936.
Distilled in column stills for a light, clean grain spirit, building the light Glasgow grain style. An ex-Bourbon barrel shaped it, American oak giving coconut and toffee. At over three decades it is rich and oily, coconut, butterscotch and tropical fruit over old oak. Grain whisky like this rewards long maturation, the wood adding most of the character. The distillery sits in the Gorbals on the south bank of the Clyde. It is now part of the Chivas Brothers stable, working quietly in the city. Glasgow once held distilleries across the city; today only Strathclyde remains.
At a full 41.2% it is intense yet sweet. The ex-Bourbon gives butterscotch, coconut and cream. It is clean and sweet, the grain spirit shining through. It finishes clean, sweet and buttery. This is a single grain from Glasgow's only grain distillery.
