Description
Dà Mhìle Distillery bottled this Springbank, a 7 year old Campbeltown malt from 1992 and bottled at 58.6%. A release of 1000 bottles. The Springbank distillery, a family distillery since 1828, is one of the last working distilleries of old Campbeltown. The cult around Springbank has made it one of the most collected of all malts.
The make was drawn off after two and a half distillations of gently peated malt, then condensed through worm tubs. Maturation came in ex-Bourbon wood, with vanilla under the oily fruit. At this age the spirit is vivid and oily, the fruit and salt to the fore. The cool, damp Campbeltown air by the sea gives a slow, even maturation. Demand far outstrips the small output, and bottles are keenly chased. Springbank, Longrow and Hazelburn each show a different face of the one distillery. The open larch washbacks are a rare survival in modern Scotch. The distillery has become a place of pilgrimage for whisky enthusiasts.
At a full 58.6% it is bold and oily. A briny, oily depth with a hint of peat are layered with vanilla, honey and coconut. The mouthfeel is oily, the fruit carried on a salty body. A warming, oily finish lingers long. This is a hand made Campbeltown single malt.
