Description
Single malt Springbank, an independent Claxton's bottling, a 21 year old release from 1999 and bottled at 45.3%. Springbank is a Campbeltown distillery run by J and A Mitchell since 1828, famous for doing everything on site, from floor malting to bottling. The distillery sits in the heart of Campbeltown, near the head of its sea loch.
It was distilled two and a half times from lightly peated, floor malted malt, with the spirit condensed in worm tubs. A sherry cask wrapped the oily spirit in dried fruit and a nutty depth. Past twenty years the spirit turns waxy and profound while keeping its character. Coastal warehousing gives the malt its briny, mineral lift. The spirit is filled to cask and matured within the distillery walls. Few distilleries keep so much of the old craft alive under one roof. Campbeltown was once the whisky capital of the world, with more than thirty distilleries at its peak.
At 45.3% it is supple and briny. A coastal, waxy spirit with gentle peat sit over dried fruit, fig and walnut. It is deep and complex, the maritime spirit shining through. It finishes deep, complex and maritime. This is a revered Campbeltown single malt.
