Description
A distillery bottling of Speyburn and bottled at 40%. Speyburn was built in 1897 opposite Glen Grant near Rothes, and Inver House has run it since 1991. It was the first Scottish distillery fitted with drum maltings, which still stand on site.
It was drawn off the stills into worm tubs, the old way of condensing, for a light, floral spirit with a worm tub weight. A Rum cask shaped it, lending brown sugar and a tropical lift. Carrying no age, it leans on apple, pear and a soft vanilla. The cool Speyside climate gives a slow, even maturation over many years. Speyburn sits in a wooded glen on the edge of Rothes, one of Speyside's prettiest distilleries. Charles Doig, who designed it, invented the pagoda roof now seen across Scotch distilleries. It was the first Scottish distillery fitted with drum maltings, still preserved on site.
At an approachable 40% it is fresh and balanced. The Rum cask adds brown sugar and a tropical lift, and a gentle vanilla and coconut from the wood, with pear, honey and a fragrant lift. The texture is rounded and soft, the fruit lifted by honey. A long, honeyed finish carries a fruity lift. This is the fresh Speyside malt of the Glen of Rothes.
