Description
Big Peat The Chinese New Year Edition is a Douglas Laing Islay blended malt built around peated malts, Port Ellen included. The blend draws the peated names of Islay together into a single smoky whole. The range has grown into a cult of its own among peat lovers.
It brings together single malts from across Islay rather than one distillery alone. Built without an age statement, Port Ellen lends the vatting a graceful, maritime smoke. An ex-Bourbon cask shaped it, soft refill oak that lets the smoke lead. The slow loss of the angel's share, a percent or two each year, has concentrated the liquid over decades. Douglas Laing has long specialised in the malts of the islands. A dram built for those who take their whisky smoky. The Port Ellen within ties it to one of Islay's lost legends. Smoke, salt and citrus run through its Islay character.
Bottled at a cask strength 48.8%, it is intense. Crystallised lemon and a salty tang ride on a soft maritime smoke, with a touch of vanilla and cream from the wood. A crystallised lemon and a saline tang lift the smoke. A waxy, gently medicinal finish lingers long. An assertive, coastal blended malt touched by Port Ellen smoke.
