Released under the original Brechin name, this 29 year old was bottled by Cadenhead's for its Chairman's Stock from a 1977 vintage, in an outturn of 174 bottles. The spirit comes from the Angus distillery the Guthries founded as Townhead in 1820, renamed Brechin and then North Port, and shut by DCL in the 1983 closures that ended so many Highland plants at once.

It spent twenty nine years in ex-Bourbon American oak, the refill style that lets a light, dry malt mature without being smothered. At this age the whisky sits in late oxidative maturity, the fruit baked down to a richer depth, a waxy weight built up and the first dry old oak notes beginning to show as the strength slowly eases over the decades. Worm tub condensers and the light Brechin spirit gave the cask a clean, dry base to work on across the decades.

Bottled at 51.4%, it keeps a firm core under the age. The vanilla here is vanillin from the spent lignin, the coconut and cream from the oak lactones, and slow oxidation layers in beeswax and polished oak over North Port's dry fruit and faint juniper lift. The tannins are firm but rounded, the finish long and dignified, from a Brechin distillery that has been gone since the 1990s.
