Description
The Scotch Malt Whisky Society, which codes its bottlings rather than naming distilleries, 76 being Mortlach, selected this 18 Year Old, a 2006 distillation, an outturn of 534 bottles. Founded in Dufftown in 1823, Mortlach owes its rich, meaty weight to worm-tub condensers and the unusual 2.81 distillation devised by Alexander Cowie.
Eighteen years in ex-Bourbon let oxidation gain weight, baked fruit and a waxy, oily depth building over the rich, meaty spirit.
At 54.3% it shows a savoury, struck-match note, undiluted. The meaty Dufftown style.
