Description
The Scotch Malt Whisky Society, which codes its bottlings rather than naming distilleries, 76 being Mortlach, drew this 30 Year Old, a 1993 vintage, an outturn of 162 bottles. Mortlach, owned by John Walker & Sons from 1923, makes a dense, sulphury Speyside through worm tubs and its singular 2.81-times distillation.
By thirty years the robust Mortlach spirit had reached the edge of its life, meaty depth turned to leather, beeswax and dried fruit, the tannins held short of bitterness.
At 52.7% it shows citrus, honey and an oak-framed depth carried on the heavy Dufftown body, undiluted. The savoury Dufftown style.
