Description
The cask strength 12 Years Old has been a near-annual fixture in Diageo's Special Releases since the early 2000s, and this 2002 is among the first. The distillery dates from 1816, set in its namesake bay on southern Islay.
Lagavulin runs its pear-shaped stills slowly for a heavy, peated spirit. Twelve years in ex-Bourbon, bottled at full strength, give a fierce, direct take on the smoke.
Bottled undiluted at 57.8%. Guaiacol and phenols drive the maritime smoke, the ex-Bourbon giving vanilla, the full strength sharpening both. An early cask strength Special Release.
